The Official Head Vocal Coach of NBC’s Emmy Award Winning “The Voice” Seasons 1-4, Vocal Director and Vocal Coach on MTV’s StarMaker and Vocal Coach and Vocal Director on P. Diddy’s Making His Band.
Romeo Johnson, a native of Chattanooga Tennessee arrived on the L.A. music scene making a name for himself by singing at various open mic venues and playing bass guitar and singing background vocals for Ali Woodson (former lead vocalist of the Temptations).
Romeo’s first tour was with Vesta Williams as a background vocalist and dancer, followed by touring with Jody Watley as a bass guitarist and bass synth player, shortly after he toured with Sheena Easton singing duets with Sheena and playing bass guitar. While touring with Jody Watley and Sheena Easton, Romeo recorded and performed with Jennifer Holliday, David Peaston, M.C. Hammer, Adam Ant and James Ingram. After Sheena, Romeo toured with Janet Jackson on The Janet Tour. He is the first and only male vocalist to ever tour with Janet Jackson. Romeo did a World Tour with Rashaan Patterson as a background vocalist and was also asked to do some performances as the bass guitarist for TLC.
In 1999, Romeo was hired as a background singer for Michael Jackson. He holds the distinct honor of being the only vocalist to ever tour with both Janet and Michael Jackson. He was a background and co-lead vocalist for the band Rufus. Romeo was the Vocal Director for the New Jack Swing Reunion tour featuring Teddy Riley, GUY and Blackstreet. Romeo also toured with Queen Latifah and was featured in a duet with Queen Latifah in her Traveling Light Tour. This relationship with Queen Latifah lead to a National CoverGirl Commercial featuring Romeo’s vocals singing the “Easy Breezy Beautiful” CoverGirl Jingle.
Romeo was the Vocal Director and Section Leader for the Michael Jackson MJ Forever Tribute in Cardiff, Wales. Upon returning from Cardiff, Romeo landed the position of Vocal Director for Ne-Yo.
Romeo is busy as an accomplished Vocal Coach. His celebrity clients include Trey Songz, Avril Lavigne, El Debarge, Teddy Riley, Priyanka Chopra, Diddy, Danila Kozlovsky, Ester Dean, and Cassie to name a few. He also composes and records jingles and radio I.D.’s nationally and internationally. Romeo displayed his acting skills in two plays, “Young Man Older Woman – The sequel” and “Love in All the Wrong Faces”.
Romeo’s vocals can be heard in a few major motion picture soundtracks “Cookout” starring Queen Latifah and “Radio” starring Cuba Gooding Jr. He is also an accomplished and published songwriter who wrote two songs for the BET comedy horror movie “Holla”.
Romeo worked on American Idol for two seasons, Soul Train Music Awards, BET Awards, BET Walk of Fame for Smokey Robinson, The American Music Awards, appeared in an episode of “Fatherhood” featuring Snoop Dogg and sang at the Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman’s after party. Romeo recorded background vocals on CD’s by Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, James Ingram, Jennifer Holliday, Ice Cube, Mack 10 and many others.
For the past six years, Romeo has displayed his vocal coaching skills on major network competition singing shows such as StarMaker, P. Diddy’s “Making His Band” and NBC’s The Voice Seasons 1-4. He also appeared on the “Dr. Phil” show as a mentor in a former contestant’s intervention.
Romeo is now an Adjunct Professor in the Pop Music Program at USC Thornton Popular School of Music.
